Volunteer
Our team of 100+ volunteers are the heartbeat of Back2Bikes. Whether you are turning a wrench or working behind the scenes, every day you lend helps keep bikes out of landfill and provides free, reliable transport to people in need.
Volunteer roles
Workshop Mechanics
No prior mechanical experience? No worries!
You’ll pair up with an experienced mechanic who will show you the ropes until you are ready to take off your training wheels.
Learn valuable bike maintenance skills while fixing up rides every day for the community.
Operations & Support
It takes more than tools to keep our non-profit running strong.
We are always looking for help with Marketing, IT & Tech, Graphic Design, Event Coordination, Business Strategy, and Admin.
What to Expect as a Workshop Mechanic
Joining our workshop team is a rewarding, hands-on way to give back. To ensure a smooth onboarding process for everyone, here is what you need to know about volunteering in the workshop:
Essential Volunteer Information
Shift Hours:
Day Shifts: Monday to Saturday | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (complimentary lunch provided to all volunteers)
Evening Refurbishing Shifts: Monday & Wednesday | 5/6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: In-person at 525 Williamstown Rd, Port Melbourne, VIC 3207.
Time Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a weekly shift for a minimum of 3 months. Training new team members takes dedicated time from our senior mechanics and consistent attendance helps you build your skills quickly!
Age Requirement: All volunteers must be 18 years or older.
Corporate Volunteer Days
Give back, bond with your team and get hands dirty for a great cause at our Port Melbourne workshop. Your team will learn bicycle mechanics while helping us dismantle donated bikes—salvaging parts to build free "Opportunity Bikes" for refugees, domestic violence survivors, and locals in need.
What to Expect
Hands-On Work: Work in pairs at professional ParkTool stands to dismantle bikes and sort parts for reuse or recycling.
Team Challenge: Test your skills in a fun, friendly competition using bicycle tyres and tubes.
Fully Equipped: We supply custom name tags, aprons, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. (Just bring enclosed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little greasy!)

Base Package: $2,500 for up to 25 participants across the day.
Extra Team Members: $100 per person for teams over 25 (up to 32 max).
