This in-depth 6-week course is designed for serious cyclists who want to build the knowledge and confidence to perform basic repairs, adjustments, and ensure the roadworthiness of their bikes.

To cover the wide range of types, specifications, and variations of modern bikes you can bring your own bike if it is suitable or specially prepared bikes will be provided for hands-on experience. The course includes discussions, relevant instruction videos from Park Tool and GCN, and extensive hands-on experience.

Course Structure

Week Topic Key Areas Covered
Week 1 Basic Mechanical Skills Tools, workshop requirements, fasteners, thread locking, anti-seize & torque, bearing types. Diagnosing and solving problems.
Week 2 Tyres and Tubes Valve types, tyre sizing/types, wheel demounting, tube/tyre faults, inspection, repair, and correct inflation.
Week 3 Gears and Transmission Gear/change mechanism types, chain inspection and wear, bottom bracket types, rear sprockets maintenance and cleaning.
Week 4 Brakes Brake types (Caliper, V, Disk, Hydraulic, Cable), inspection for wear, adjustment, pad replacement, disc rotors.
Week 5 Frames & Components Frame, handlebar, grips, bar tape, stems, saddles, headsets & forks. Inspection and maintenance/replacement where applicable.
Week 6 On-Ride Repair Overview Culmination of learnings. Focusing on emergency repairs: punctures, damaged tyres, broken spokes/chains, bent hangers, mystery noises, crash damage, and safety checks.
